Moving pets overseas

Moving pets to the USA

The importation of pets to America is a complicated business, not least because of the many laws which govern the process. There are various guides to the importation of pets to the United States, available in hard copy or to be downloaded straight onto a computer. Most of these guides are quite expensive but are available via major US bookstores.

Despite the stringent laws which surround animal transportation there is no requirement for quarantine on entry for animals travelling from the UK. In addition, a PETS passport is not strictly necessary for dogs and cats. In spite of this legal recommendation it is often wise to acquire a PETS passport anyway, to ease your journey if/when you ever need to relocate again. Any local vetinary practice will be able to arrange for a passport to be provided.

When exporting an animal from the UK a Rabies vaccination is not required as the UK has maintained its Rabies-free status. However, many specialists advise that a Rabies inoculation should be given (at least a month) before exporting animals from the UK in order to protect the animal from the date of their arrival in the United States.

There are additional restrictions governing the removal of pets to different areas of The States according to the season in which you move. These “temperature restrictions” tend to have a greater impact at smaller, more rural airports where facilities may be less complex. There is no reason why you cannot move with an animal to most US destinations but when flying to smaller airports do bear in mind that you may have a limited choice of airlines with which to travel.

Pets travelling with some American airlines may require “acclimatisation certificates” for use within the relevant seasons. Do not forget to check with your removals company whether you need to produce this documentation if you are travelling with an animal. “Fit to Fly” health certificates are also required on all airlines. Your local vet should be able to arrange this. The certificate needs to be issued within just five days of export.
