Moving pets overseas
Moving pets to South Africa
Cats, dogs and some other domestic animals can be imported into South Africa from the UK. In order to do so, it is best to be warned of the large quantities of paperwork which will be involved in this process.
The micro chipping of pets that are imported into South Africa is now essential. This quick and easy process can be arranged with your local vets. In addition to this procedure you will be required to obtain an import permit for your pet from the South African Ministry of Agriculture. As is the case in many other countries, the South African authorities require export papers to be signed within two days of departure to South Africa by most vets.
Dogs and cats moving to South Africa from the UK do not need to have a rabies vaccination to enter the country. Most pet-owners are, however, advised by their vets to voluntarily get their pet this vaccination in order to protect their pet from any potential diseases in their new country of residence. Also, for dogs, a blood test for Leishmaniasis must be taken no more than 30 days prior to your departure date.
For more information on rabies, vaccinations and to obtain a pet import application, you should visit South Africa’s Directorate of Veterinary Services website at or call 0027 12 319 7514.
Amusingly, it is worth noting that all dogs and cats flying to South Africa are required to be booked as “manifested cargo” rather than “excess baggage”… a distinction one imagines it would be difficult to miss even once and that you are definitely not going to make twice!
