Moving with children
On moving day
- If possible, have a friend, relative or babysitter to look after your younger children for the day. Younger children are likely to feel confused, neglected or in the way during the move. If you cannot find someone to take care of them for the day, give them something (preferably not a television show) to keep them busy. Try to find a moving-related task or game to give your children.
- Give your children age-appropriate tasks. Teenagers can be involved with the actual planning and organising of the move, and toddlers can tick off to-do lists or count boxes. The important thing is that you keep everyone busy. Moving is, after all, a team effort.
- Let your children (especially teenagers) know how grateful you are for their support. Hug them and tell them how proud you are of them. Tell them how much the family benefits from their cooperation. Make your children feel appreciated.
Stay as upbeat and positive as possible. Moving may be stressful, but if you let it bother you, your children will pick up on your attitude. Hugs and smiles go a long way.
