Warwick
Warwick has something for everyone, offering residents and visitors entertainment including classical, folk and contemporary music festivals. Between late November and early December, a Victorian Evening is held in the town and St. Mary’s Church also organises a lot of events such as Early Music Concerts. In addition, The Bridge Theatre offers Music-in-Round concerts. For those more interested in sport, Warwick is home to a small golf course and the famous Warwick Racecourse.
The town is also very well known for Warwick Castle, the building of which started in 1068. Warwick has a long history and the evidence of this can be seem through the historic architecture. The town was founded in 914AD on the banks of the River Avon, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Fortunately there are many buildings still standing from the seventeenth century and Tudor times, which managed to escape the great fire of 1694 which destroyed a great deal of the medieval town. The Castle Hill Baptist Church is one of the oldest churches in the world, located in Warwick and open for visitors.
Whilst the town is historic, many developments are still going on today. Indeed, the Warwick Gates development which is currently underway is regenerating a housing development. There is also much investment in the area. Warwick Technology Park is home to the National Grid Plc and the National Transmission System and IBM and Volvo Group UK are located in the nearby Wedgnock Industrial Estate, providing the area with a health economy and ample scope for residents to find work. The University of Warwick and Warwick School, an independent school for boys, are also both located in the area.
Warwick is a picturesque town with a population of 25,434 (according to a 2001 census), situated only eleven miles south of Coventry and two and a half miles west of Leamington Spa. The town is near the M40 and has good bus and rail links, so those who cannot drive can easily get around.
