The Cotswolds, a range of hills designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty is located 10 miles to the south of the Stratford. Due to the ideal conditions it has been a major-sheep producing area since medieval times. Shakespeare’s own father traded wool in Stratford. Some of the street names reflect this historic industry ‘Sheep Street’ was the road along which animals from the Cotswolds were driven to be traded. Today Stratford’s industry has some what evolved with tourism becoming the main employer locally, events like the annual Shakespeare birthday celebrations, a tremendous spectacle which really attracts the crowds.
Recent notoriety associated with the town was sparked by Indie band Klaxons whose members are local to Stratford paying homage to the town on receiving the coveted Mercury Music Prize in 2007. The Old Bull Inn located just outside Stratford is the place where long-running radio serial ‘The Archers’ based its fictional pub ‘The bull’ upon.
