Leicester
Leicester is a vibrant city. With 441,213 people residing in the Leicester Urban Area as of a 2006 estimate, Leicester is the tenth most populous settlement in the United Kingdom. The area is diverse and has the largest ethnic minority population, particularly of South Asian origin, in the UK. As a result,
Leicester is a culturally and religiously diverse area and there are many Hindu, Sikh and Muslim places of worship. In addition, the area is home to Leicester and De Montford Universities and is regarded as a centre for diversity. Leicester is located conveniently close to the M1 motorway and on the Midland Main Line and so travelling across the country is easy and relatively quick.

Leicester has a long history as a settlement; indeed it is one of the oldest cities in England and dates back at least two thousand years to the pre-Roman era when it was the capital of the Celtic Corieltauvi tribe. Over time the area developed into one of the largest towns in Roman Britain and became an important trading centre. The evidence of this history is evident from the remains of Roman baths, the Jewry Wall and other artefacts. The area’s natural resources, the River Soar and the National Forest, no doubt encouraged this development. In the nineteenth century, Leicester became synonymous with engineering, shoemaking and hosiery production. The development which occurred in Leicester allowed the area to be classed as a county borough in 1889 and as a city in 1919.

Leicester has a budding art scene. The city is home to an annual Caribbean Carnival and hosts Leicester Pride every year.  The Leicester Comedy Festival is the largest of its type in the UK and the Leicester International Short Film Festival is very popular with tourists and residents alike. The city centre offers a variety of shops and there are several museums including the Newarke Houses Museum, New Walk Museum, Abbey Pumping Station and the Leicester Gas Museum.

Sport is also a popular form of recreation in Leicester. There are several local sports teams including, the Leicester Tigers (rugby union), Leicester City (football), Leicester Corintanian A.C. (Athletics) and the Leicestershire Country Cricket Club. Leicester has its own racecourse and a swimming club called the Leicester Penguins.
