The Leeds City Museum, the Abbey House Museum, the Thwaite Mills Watermill Museum and the Armley Mills Industrial Museum are all major tourist attractions based in Leeds. There are also several other museums in the area including the Thackray Museum and Otley Museums, which are open to visitors and residents.
Leeds Art Gallery is also very popular and there are many theatres and ballets in the city which are worth visiting. Leeds is also a hot spot for new music and famous musicians and bands such as Soft Cell, Hadouken!, Kaiser Chiefs, Gang of Four, The Rhythm Sisters and Melanie B of the Spice Girls. Leeds Carnival is Western Europe’s oldest West Indian Carnival and is organised every year. The annual Leeds Festival based in Bramham Park, attracts large rock and pop names. The Garforth Arts Festival and the Leeds International Film Festival both also attract thousands of visitors.
Leeds United A.F.C brings a lot of people to the area and is the city’s main football club. Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Carnegie (Rugby Union) and Leeds Rhinos (Rugby League) are also based in Leeds and have many fans. Leeds City Athletics Club competes in the British Athletics League and UK Women's League as well as the Northern Athletics League.
Leeds has a vibrant nightlife. With a very large student population, there is plenty of choice when it comes to bars, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants and live music venues. The infamous club nights, Back 2 Basics and Speedqueen originated in Leeds and there are a few ‘super-clubs’ and independent clubs in the area. There is also an established gay nightlife scene.
