London is the capital city of the United Kingdom, and its largest city with a population of some eight million. It is the seat of power, home to the Houses of Parliament and the head of state, HM Queen Elizabeth II, with residences at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

London has a diverse mixture of people, places and cultures, and is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It will be the host for the 2012 Olympic Games, the third time the city has hosted the games.

London is well-known for its museums and theatres, the London Eye, London Zoo, Trafalgar Square and Oxford Street. It is the home of Wimbledon, of Wembley Stadium, of Twickenham, the home of rugby union, and of five Premiership football teams (Chelsea, West Ham, Arsenal, Tottenham and Fulham).   Notable buildings include St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, City Hall, the Gherkin, Canary Wharf, the South Bank and the O2 stadium, the world’s most popular music venue.

The city has comprehensive rail links with an extensive overground and underground rail systems, and good road links to the rest of the UK. It has five international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and City airports).
