Leamington Spa is named after the River Leam, which flows through the town. During the nineteenth century, Leamington Spa was one of the towns which expanded the fastest in terms of population, housing and industry. The canal which opened officially in 1799 allowed business in the area to flourish, as well as the tourism trade.
The town offers an indoor shopping centre, The Royal Priors and the Shires Retail Park is also a popular shopping area just outside the main town. There are two theatres and a cinema as well as the Leamington Football Club, the Quarry Park golf course and several cricket and hockey clubs.
The town has appeared in Chuckle Vision, Keeping up Appearances and Danger Field. Charles Dickens also set a scene in the novel Dombey and Son in the town. Leamington Spa is well connected to the rest of the country. The Leamington railway station runs trains to London, Marylebone and Birmingham, Snow Hill. There are fast train services operated by Chiltern Railways and connections to Coventry, reading, Oxford, Bournemouth, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Worcester. For road users, Leamington Spa town centre is only five kilometres away from the M40 which links the area to Birmingham and London and the A46, which goes towards Coventry. Busses are in regular operation around the town and the nearest commercial airport is Coventry Airport.
