Holland
Nowhere in Holland is further than two or three hours from Amsterdam, the country’s capital city and what has become recently termed ‘Art City’. Indeed, in Amsterdam, galleries containing paintings and exhibitions for some of the world’s most famous artists, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Mondrian can be found. All of these artists were born in Holland and undertook much of their work there. There is also a budding modern art scene developing in the capital. Amsterdam is also a very environmentally friendly city, with bikes being twice as popular as cars.
Interestingly, the name of the city originates from a combination of the Amstel, the river the city was built upon and the Dam that was built to protect it. Amstel is famous Dutch export, the beer is brewed locally and originally the waters of the river served to refrigerate the barrels.
Holland is also famous for Tulips and Clogs. Tulips were originally exported from Turkey to be grown in Holland for medicinal purposes, however by the 17th century the flower was starting to be used for decoration. Holland’s low lying flat lands conditions make the country ideal for growing tulips and other crops. In addition, the Netherlands is one the largest dairy exporters in the world. Holland is synonymous with clogs, which were traditionally worn by farmers, and many farmers still wear clogs, to protect their feet from cattle treading on them.
Almost half of Holland lies below sea level. Holland is located west of the Netherlands facing the North Sea. Those considering moving to the country need not be alarmed for Holland is also known its vast network of canals and waterways. Without the continuous drainage these water systems provide, 65% of the country would be flooded daily. Windmills were used to drain the land prior to the invention of the canals and waterways; they can still be seen across the countryside and are recognised as a national symbol of Holland.
