The United States iof America is probably the most cosmopolitan country in the world - it has a huge mix of peoples from all over the world, with the four main ancestry groups being Irish, English, African and German, with the Hispanic group the current fastest growing.
The USA is the third largest country in the world by land and population, with English the main language, spoken by 80 per cent of the population, followed by Spanish, spoken by 12 per cent, and Chinese. Religion in the USA follows the ancestry groups with over half the population Protestant and a quarter Roman Catholic.
The capital of the USA is washington DC, not to be confused with Washington State, which is on the other side of the country. The United States was established in the 18th century following the declaration of independence of 13 British Colonies. Today, there are 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska.
The main cities in the US are New York, Los Angeles, Chicargo, Dalla, Philadelphia, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Washington and Boston.
