Portugal
Catholicism is the country’s national religion and this, combined with the fact that the country has a single language, has done much to create a sense of nationalism and unity. Legal immigrants to the country are made welcome, although the country receives relatively few. Of the 10,617,575 inhabitants, 332,137 are migrants. Portugal has its own version of our National Health Service and the average life expectancy is 78.6 years (as of 2007).

Portugal is the westernmost country in Europe and on the Iberian Peninsula. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Spain and including the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira and Portugal, the country is hot all year round, especially when compared to the British climate. Indeed, one major advantage of moving to Portugal is the heat and it is for this reason that many emigrate.

Portugal has many different architectural styles and the late Gothic types are particularly striking. For those who prefer to visit galleries to see art, there are numerous opportunities in Portugal. Indeed, Malhoa, Pinheiro, Braga and Quental, amongst lots of other famous artists who have come from or have studied their trade in Portugal. Many also consider music as a form as art. Traditional Portuguese music includes a type of melancholy urban style, known as fado and Portuguese guitar.  More modern music is also popular. The gothic-metal band, Moonspell, most famous in Germany outside of the country is just one example.

Athletics, rugby, fencing, swimming and hockey are all watched and played in Portugal, but football is the country’s main sporting passion. Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have both been FIFA Players of the Year, and many respected managers come from the country.
